Texans seek second-round pick for Brandin Cooks, moot extension

Brandin Cooks‘ Contract expires at the end of the season and the much-traded wide receiver appears to be back on familiar territory. The Texas wide receiver is reviving trade interest, but the team isn’t willing to part with their top pass catcher just to lose salary.

Texans seek second round pick for Brandin Cooks moot

The Texans are getting calls to the Cooks, according to ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler (via Bleacher Report), and find that the recovery team has been taking multiple inquiries about the eight-year veteran. Houston acquired Cooks in 2020, and though the team is early in a rebuild, the AFC South roster has stuck with the former Saints, Patriots and Rams weapon.

However, Houston has discussed an extension with Cooks, ProFootballNetwork.com’s Aaron Wilson tweets, and is currently not considered likely to move him. While Cooks seems a poor fit on this Texas team, the franchise is developing a young quarterback Davis Mills and other proven wideouts are missing. If the Texans are serious about a Cooks trade, Wilson notes that the team wants at least one second-round pick.

The former first-round wideout was traded in 2017, 2018 and 2020. He clinched first-round picks from the Patriots and Rams, and the Texans acquired the nomadic receiver for a second-rounder. After the 20’s season, Cooks even spoke out against a possible fourth trade. With the Texans coming off a consecutive four-win season, the 28-year-old pass catcher could be more amenable to another move. Cooks, who was in New England during GM Nick Caserio and Executive Vice President Jack Easterby‘s time with the AFC East franchise is expected to bring in a base salary of $12.5 million this season.

Cooks has had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Texans; He has now posted four-digit reception boards for four teams. The speedster was recovering from a scary 2019 when he suffered multiple concussions. A concussion also forced Cooks out of Super Bowl LII. Although his history of head injuries is certainly a cause for concern, the Oregon State graduate has been producing everywhere he has been. Its history of production on competing teams will likely continue to generate trade rumours.
