Texas A&M is expected to fire head coach Jimbo Fisher today, according to multiple reports Sunday morning.
The news comes less than 24 hours after Saturday’s 51-10 victory over Mississippi State, which increased their season record to 6-4 and made them eligible to bowl.
But it clearly wasn’t enough to silence the doubts surrounding Fisher.
According to Yahoo Sports, the groundwork for Fisher’s firing was laid on Thursday after a four-hour meeting, with further discussions scheduled for Sunday.
His buyout is a record $75 million and he has eight years left on his contract.
Texas A&M is expected to fire head coach Jimbo Fisher today – at a huge cost
The 58-year-old signed a 10-year contract that is fully guaranteed and will reportedly be paid around $9 million per year.
Since taking over in 2018, Fisher’s record at the school is 45-25.
Fisher came to Texas from Florida State and had already won a national title there in 2013.
Texas has two games left in the season against Abilene Christian and LSU.
After the win in Mississippi, Fisher had no idea his firing was imminent and said the spirit of his team was “tremendous.”
He added: “They keep playing, are resilient and come back and get better. “They are high character, high quality kids.
“Hopefully we play another great game next week and another great game last week.”
