Just last week, Cuellar called for an “impact” on illegal migrants amid a new wave of border crossings.
The number of border crossings in the 2023 fiscal year, which ends in late September, is on track to surpass that of 2022 after figures in August showed a 50,000 increase in apprehensions.
“We need to have an impact at the border.” What does that mean? “You have to deport people, and you have to show pictures of people being deported,” Cuellar told Fox News on Sunday.
“When was the last time we saw people walking the other way instead of just seeing people streaming in?”
The moderate Democrat represents a region along the border that includes San Antonio. According to Cuellar, neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump have a plan to solve the problem.

“I think that Trump has gone too far to the right with the separation of families and children, and then I think that President Biden, the administration, is not doing enough.” “We have to find the right balance,” he told the moderator Bill Hemmer.
“You have to listen to community leaders.”
The congressman said the U.S. needs to convince Mexico to take action and secure its own borders to stop migrants before they reach the U.S. border.
“I’ve been saying this for years,” Cuellar said, “we as Democrats and Republicans can continue to play defense on the 1-yard line, or we can play defense on their 20-yard line — and that’s what Mexico is doing.” more.’
