The Texas Longhorns travel to the Palo Alto Super Regional after the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 7-1 at Sunken Diamond on Monday to win a third elimination game and advance.
An early-game pitcher duel with Texas A&M starter Nathan Dettmer, trying to weather a mostly disappointing season, gradually turned into a comfortable victory for a Stanford team that had runs from the fifth through the eighth innings scored
As the Aggies missed ten runners in seven hits, the Cardinal went 4-for-9 with runners in goal position to deliver the region-defining clutch jabs needed to progress.
Batsman designated Braden Montgomery went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, aided by a two-run home run by catcher Malcom Moore in the sixth inning that gave the game the winning lead.
In Stanford left-hander Quinn Matthews’ first backup appearance this season, the Cardinal ace threw four innings of scoreless baseball, bridging the gap to left-handed closer Ryan Bruno, whose high-90s fastball and high-level slider slammed the door the Aggies with three strikeouts to end the game and the region.
