At least 35 people, including 22 children, died in the attack on a crèche in Na Klang in northern Thailand, a police colonel in Nong Bua Lamphu province said on Thursday (October 6). The children killed were between 2 and 3 years old, he said. Twelve people were also injured, three of them seriously. The prime suspect, a 34-year-old former police officer, then killed his wife and child before killing himself, a police colonel said.

The attack began at 12:30 local time (6:30 GMT) at a kindergarten before the attacker fled by car and hit several pedestrians, according to Colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya. “He tried to hit other people on the street. He hit a motorcycle and two people were injured. I ran away quickly,” witness Paweena Purichan, 31, told AFP, who rode his motorcycle to his shop. “There was blood everywhere,” she said.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha has ordered an investigation into the “appalling” massacre. “I would like to extend my deepest sorrow and condolences to the families of those who died and were injured,” he added.
