By definition, as the New Atlas website states, this new engine called e-Rex is actually a two-stroke engine, meaning it has two movements (two strokes) in its combustion process.

However, unlike most traditional two-stroke engines, it doesn’t burn oil and doesn’t have to use its own movements to lubricate or cool itself. These operations are carried out separately, as is the case with a conventional four-stroke car engine.

More powerful and efficient

More specifically, in INNengine’s e-Rex there is only compression and combustion, like a two-stroke engine, with intake and exhaust occurring simultaneously. Despite its compact size, this 500 cc engine is also more powerful (126 hp) and thermodynamically more efficient than four-stroke engines.

On the other hand, it is significantly less dirty and noisy than conventional models with two-stroke engines. This new model therefore has the advantages of a two-stroke engine without any of its disadvantages.

The e-Rex features an opposed piston configuration where there are four pistons on each side, for a total of eight. It offers smooth operation with very little noise and vibration while the packaging keeps the motor small.

This INNengine engine could be very useful for cars since, according to the developer, it would extend the autonomy of electric or hybrid vehicles, especially thanks to its low consumption and compact appearance. It would also reduce the size and weight of the battery, thus providing a better option for long-distance driving – especially if it can be used as a multi-fuel option. Given that batteries are still the heaviest and most expensive element of an electric vehicle today, “this could be a godsend,” the company concludes.
