The year 2024 has arrived with news for the cinema screens. From “Dune” to the Brazilian literary classic “Grande Sertão Veredas,” the most anticipated films have been listed below by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, which selected 15 releases. Checkout:

Dune Part 2

The book Dune landed in theaters in 2021. The second part is already planned for the end of 2023. The sequel to the adaptation of the science fiction classic written by Frank Herbert has been postponed to early 2024 due to the German strike at the Hollywood Actors Guild.

Zendaya, who was also part of Dune, will star in Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino's Rivals, which was originally slated to be the opening film at the recent Venice Film Festival.

In the plot, the actress plays a promising tennis player who becomes her husband's coach after an injury (Mike Faist, from Amor, Sublime Amor). The protagonist lives a love triangle with him and his greatest adversary (Josh O'Connor, the young Prince Charles from “The Crown”), with whom the couple has been friends since they were teenagers.

Mad Max: Fury Road is getting a sequel from veteran filmmaker George Miller. The new chapter tells the origins of the title character and features actress Anya TaylorJoy (of The Queen's Gambit) in the role of the warrior played by Charlize Theron in the previous feature. The cast of Furiosa also includes “Thor” Chris Hemsworth.

Gladiator, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2001 from director Ridley Scott, has a sequel starring Paul Mescal (in Aftersun), who plays the son of the protagonist Maximus, who was played by Russell Crowe in the original.

Without directing a feature film since O Bem Amado, filmmaker Guel Arraes returns to the screen in 2010 with the adaptation of Guimarães Rosa's book. The film stars the director's daughter, Luísa Arraes, alongside Caio Blat and Rodrigo Lombardi.

The script was written by Arraes himself along with director Jorge Furtado. Grande Sertão had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, where it won the Best Director award for Arraes.

Civil War

Actor Wagner Moura is investing in his international career, with his first protagonist in a North American production in filmmaker Alex Garland's new film (from the acclaimed Ex Machina and Annihilation).

In the film, the Brazilian actor, alongside a photojournalist played by Kirsten Dunst (Attack of the Dogs), attempts to survive a postapocalyptic civil war in the United States caused by the current political polarization that is dividing the country. The cast includes Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny and Jesse Plemons.

For another Brazilian debut, singer, composer, actor and dancer Ney Matogrosso receives a biopic by Esmir Filho (from Os Famosos e os Duendes da Morte). The main role is played by the actress Jesuíta Barbosa.

Filming for the film is scheduled to begin in February 2024. Ney himself took part in the development of the script, which will tell his childhood, youth, adult life and maturity.
