The year 2024 has arrived with news for the cinema screens. From “Dune” to the Brazilian literary classic “Grande Sertão Veredas,” the most anticipated films have been listed below by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, which selected 15 releases. Checkout:
Dune Part 2
The book Dune landed in theaters in 2021. The second part is already planned for the end of 2023. The sequel to the adaptation of the science fiction classic written by Frank Herbert has been postponed to early 2024 due to the German strike at the Hollywood Actors Guild.

The background of the story is the romance between the protagonist Paul Atraides (Timothée Chalamet) and the young Chani (Zendaya) as well as the new villain FeydRautha Harknonnen, played by Austin Butler from Elvis.
Director Denis Villeneuve, next to him Christopher Nolanthe script for a third chapter of the saga is already ready.
Premiere in Brazil: February 29, 2024.
Rivals
Zendaya, who was also part of Dune, will star in Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino's Rivals, which was originally slated to be the opening film at the recent Venice Film Festival.
In the plot, the actress plays a promising tennis player who becomes her husband's coach after an injury (Mike Faist, from Amor, Sublime Amor). The protagonist lives a love triangle with him and his greatest adversary (Josh O'Connor, the young Prince Charles from “The Crown”), with whom the couple has been friends since they were teenagers.
Premiere in Brazil: April 25th.
Angry
Mad Max: Fury Road is getting a sequel from veteran filmmaker George Miller. The new chapter tells the origins of the title character and features actress Anya TaylorJoy (of The Queen's Gambit) in the role of the warrior played by Charlize Theron in the previous feature. The cast of Furiosa also includes “Thor” Chris Hemsworth.
Premiere in Brazil: May 23rd.
Gladiator 2
Gladiator, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2001 from director Ridley Scott, has a sequel starring Paul Mescal (in Aftersun), who plays the son of the protagonist Maximus, who was played by Russell Crowe in the original.

The star cast also includes Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. Due to the actors' strike, filming was paused, so there is no certainty about production. Nevertheless, Paramount Studios maintains that the film's release date is scheduled for November this year.

Joker Folie à Deux
Further sequels will follow in 2024. American actor Joaquin Phoenix returns to the role that won him the Oscar in “Joker Folie à Deux”, this time accompanied by singer Lady Gaga as his Harley Quinn. The direction remains in the hands of filmmaker Todd Phillips, who also wrote the screenplay together with Scott Silver. The cast also includes Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson.
Premiere in Brazil: October 3rd.
Great sertao
One of the greatest classics of Brazilian literature will be released in cinemas in 2024. Without directing a feature film since O Bem Amado, filmmaker Guel Arraes returns to the screen in 2010 with the adaptation of Guimarães Rosa's book. The film stars the director's daughter, Luísa Arraes, alongside Caio Blat and Rodrigo Lombardi.
The script was written by Arraes himself along with director Jorge Furtado. Grande Sertão had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, where it won the Best Director award for Arraes.
Premiere in Brazil: May 30th.
Civil War
Actor Wagner Moura is investing in his international career, with his first protagonist in a North American production in filmmaker Alex Garland's new film (from the acclaimed Ex Machina and Annihilation).
In the film, the Brazilian actor, alongside a photojournalist played by Kirsten Dunst (Attack of the Dogs), attempts to survive a postapocalyptic civil war in the United States caused by the current political polarization that is dividing the country. The cast includes Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny and Jesse Plemons.
Premiere in Brazil: April 25th.
Man with H
For another Brazilian debut, singer, composer, actor and dancer Ney Matogrosso receives a biopic by Esmir Filho (from Os Famosos e os Duendes da Morte). The main role is played by the actress Jesuíta Barbosa.
Filming for the film is scheduled to begin in February 2024. Ney himself took part in the development of the script, which will tell his childhood, youth, adult life and maturity.
Forecast date: October 31st.
Back to black
Another music icon who will have a place on screens in 2024 is British singer Amy Winehouse. With a tragic story, the artist is played by English actress Marisa Abela (from the HBO series “Industry”) in the biopic directed by filmmaker Sam TaylorJohnson, who also directed the first “Fifty Shades of Grey.” . The production is supported by Amy's family. The cast also includes Jack O'Connell (Lady Chatterley's Lover) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread).
UK release: April 12th.
The end
English filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer makes his feature film debut in “The End,” starring actress Tilda Swinton. It's a musical inspired by Hollywood classics from the 1940s and 1950s, and Swinton will be the matriarch of the last human family on Earth alongside Michael Shannon (George & Tammy) and George McKay (1917).
There is no forecast for the premiere.
Emmanuelle
The books are based on a book series by author Emmanuelle Arsan and are adapted by French filmmaker Audrey Diwan. The classic of softcore eroticism takes place in Paris and Hong Kong. At the end of the production, the title character is played by actress Noémie Merlant (“Portrait of a Young Girl in Flames”). The cast will also include Naomi Watts.

Mickey 17
After writing his name in cinema history with the phenomenon Parasite, South Korean director Bong JoonHo returns to the big screen in 2019 with Mickey 17.
The film stars an “expendable” employee, played by Robert Pattinson, on an expedition aimed at colonizing a frozen planet. The cast also includes Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie. The film is scheduled to premiere later this year, probably in Cannes or Venice.
Expected release date in Brazil: March 28th.
lightning
English filmmaker Steve McQueen, who won an Oscar for “12 Years a Slave,” returns with a feature film, “Blitz.” The plot follows a group of London characters during heavy German bombing raids in World War II.
The cast includes three British actors: Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird and Little Women”), Harris Dickinson (“Triangle of Sorrow”) and Stephen Graham (“The Irishman”). There is no premiere date for the production yet, but it will be distributed via Apple TV+.

Megalopolis
Veteran Francis Ford Coppola's new film is expected to premiere in 2024. In addition to directing, the cinema veteran wrote the script and financed the film. The main role is played by an architect (Adam Driver) who wants to rebuild a utopian replica of New York City after a catastrophic disaster. The large cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne, Forest Whitaker, Aubrey Plaza and Jason Schwartzman (the filmmaker's nephew).

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín portrays Maria Callas, played by wellknown actress Angelina Jolie. The screenplay about the life of one of the most famous and revered opera singers in history was written by Steven Knight and the cast also includes Pierfrancesco Favino (Nostalgia), Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Young Girl on Fire) and Kodi SmitMcPhee (Attack of the Dogs).
