Renowned creators and a group with great recognition in the social life of the region were worthy of the 2023 Bayamo Prize this year.

The prize, awarded by the Provincial Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac), was awarded on this occasion to the teacher and creator of the visual arts Juan Luis Maceo Núñez, the theater teacher Nicolás Javier Yaqui Labrada and the teacher and musician Augusto César Odio Feria.

It was also awarded on an honorary basis to Dr.C Historias Rafael Acosta de Arriba and Televisión Serrana.

The winners have extensive experience and contributions to the social and cultural life of the province and the country.

Juan Luis Maceo Núñez, born in this city in 1968, graduated in 1987 with a degree in drawing and sculpture from the National School of Fine Arts “San Alejandro” in Havana and is a member of the Advisory Council for the Development of Monumental Sculpture and the Environment (CODEMA) and ( UNEAC).

It has dozens of personal and collective projects, as well as works in various locations across the country and in collections in Venezuela, Germany, Canada, Russia, Spain, Brazil, Chile, Holland and the United States.

He has also taken part in events such as “ESMAR Marble Sculpture” in Cayo Coco, Ciego de Ávila; Black Sands, on the Isle of Youth; “Monte Barreto stone sculpture” and “CODEMA at the Biennale”, both in the city of Havana and many more. His work has been confirmed by prestigious awards and recognitions.

Nicolás Javier Yaqui Labrada was born on May 27, 1941 in Santa Cruz del Sur, one of the small towns of Camagüey.

The municipality of Guisa is professional and has dedicated his entire life to the development of art in this area, where he is an adopted son, a recognition given to him by the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power for his lifelong work in the cultural development of the municipality.

He also holds the Award for Cuban Culture, the Raúl Gómez García and Jesús Menéndez Medal, the Olga Alonso National Prize and for Community Culture, among other awards that make Nicolás Yaqui Labrada a true artist of the people.

For his part, Augusto César Odio Feria is a graduate of the Higher Institute of Art specializing in trombone.

As a teacher and methodologist of the instrument, he is co-author of the music pedagogy training programs. Several orchestras and formats appeared in defense of Cuban music.

Likewise, Dr.C Historias (1998) and Dr.C (2009) Rafael Acosta de Arriba, to whom the award is presented on an honorary basis, have given lectures, postgraduate courses and master’s degrees in universities in Cuba, Spain and the United States. , Brazil, Mexico, Italy and Israel.

He has published around 30 of his own books and is involved in more than 40 book publications by various authors. He is Secretary of the Scientific Categories Court of the Ministry of Culture and one of MINCULT’s advisors for the analysis of its development program.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the National Culture Award, the National Prize for Cultural Research awarded by the Cuban Ministry of Culture, and the Carlos J. Finlay Order, the highest honor bestowed by the state in the field of science. He was recently elected as a full member of the Academy of Sciences History of Cuba and belongs to UNEAC and other institutions.

In the case of Televisión Serrana, an institution based in the municipality of San Pablo de Yao, in Buey Arriba, it is a collective that issues around 400 awards and whose audiovisual output includes over 600 works, with a predominance of documentaries.

The 2023 Bayamo Prize will be awarded in a solemn ceremony next November as part of the celebration of the 510th anniversary of the founding of the village of San Salvador de Bayamo, and the winners will receive a diploma of accreditation as well as a replica of the idol of the city.
