(CNN) – As if the glitz and glamor of awards season wasn't chaotic enough, a number of factors are contributing to the 2024 cycle looking like a nightmare of high heels and glitzy-dressed programs.
The most obvious factor influencing the change this year is Hollywood's historic double strike in 2023, which notably resulted in the Emmy Awards being postponed and rescheduled eight days after this month's Golden Globes. Additionally, there are some widespread category changes, caveats about eligibility deadlines and, of course, the Golden Globes' second attempt at rebirth after a scandal that temporarily banned the show from television.
There's a lot to explore, but fear not, we're here to help explain it all so your awards season viewing rolls out like a red carpet.
The Golden Globe Awards facelift
The Golden Globe Awards and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the small group of international journalists who made up the Globes' voting body, underwent a major overhaul after the Los Angeles Times first reported the diversity and ethics scandal in 2021 that rocked the Organization. After broadcasting in 2022 and returning to a television format in 2023 with historically low ratings, the 2024 ceremony promises further changes.
For starters, there's a new voting body after Dick Clark Productions (DCP) and Eldridge acquired the rights to the Golden Globe Awards, effectively dissolving the HFPA's membership after a tumultuous few years in which the organization tried to address issues . spotted in 2021 The show also has a new broadcast home on CBS after years on NBC, as well as some new categories and an overall shakeup (more on that below). Comedian Jo Koy will host the event on Sunday.
Category changes
As part of the Golden Globe overhaul, some technical changes have also been made to the ceremony itself. The program will notably include two new categories: Film and Box Office Excellence and Best Performance by a Comedian on Television, where the most watched content will have the opportunity to shine. The addition of these new categories shortens the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Lifetime Achievement Awards.
However, it is worth noting that despite the new elements, the Golden Globes have not yet solved the problems with the classification of films, splitting the top prize between drama and musical or comedy. That led to Musical or Comedy nominations for May, December on Netflix, which left many people confused.
Additionally, the Emmys have made some changes that could alter their presentation: “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” which won the late-night category seven years in a row, was placed in the same group as “Saturday Night Luve.” “ The measure potentially opens the door to awarding a late-show program like “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” or “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Postponed dates
Even before members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA went on strike in May and July, respectively, January is historically a busy month for awards season, with awards weeks kicking off with the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards kicking off to the Oscars. However, due to strikes, the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards will now take place on January 15, after being postponed from their usual September schedule. The Emmys were last postponed in 2001 due to the September 11 attacks.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which honor mostly technical fields but also some shows and artists, will take place on January 6th and 7th, after also being postponed due to the strikes. And if January wasn't busy enough after all that, the Critics Choice Awards take place on January 14th, one day before the Primetime Emmys.
Permission window
Due to the Emmys' four-month delay and its selection window from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, some of the nominated shows for different seasons will be recognized at the Emmys and Golden Globes.
This means viewers will see Season 1 of The Bear honored at the Emmys, while Season 2 will be recognized at the Golden Globes. The same goes for “Only Murders in the Building,” which received an award for its second season at the Emmys and a third at the Globes.
The hard Hollywood role to play
Hosts for the Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys have already been secured, but it hasn't been easy. Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the Oscars for the fourth time, and the Emmys went to Anthony Anderson, who conveniently hosts a new game show on Fox, the network that broadcasts it.
The Golden Globes had difficulty searching before signing Koy. CNN previously reported that the search for a host was still ongoing in early December when the Golden Globes announced its nominations, and that comedy talent included Chris Rock, Ali Wong and podcast hosts and “SmartLess” actors Will Arnett, Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman all turned down offers to host before Koy signed.
