The Alouettes rely on a Swede

While waiting for the Canadian Football League’s main auction on Tuesday night, the Montreal Alouettes picked a Swede and an Australian during the morning’s World Draft.

With the fifth overall win, the Alouettes called up defenseman Simon Sandberg from Oregon State University Beavers. In the second round, the Montreal club picked kicker Rhys Byrns, formerly of Louisiana State University Ragin’ Cajuns, with the 14th pick.

The Ottawa Redblacks, who had the very first pick, turned to American Samoa for defenseman Blessman Ta’ala.

Keep in mind that the draft scheduled for tonight will involve more Canadian players. Quebecers Francis Bemiy, a product of Southern Utah University, and Michael Brodrique of the University of Montreal Carabins were selected in the first round.

Recently drafted in the NFL, Matthew Bergeron and Sidy Sow could also be selected, but logically later as their future seems to lie elsewhere than in the CFL.
