In the world's oldest democracy, it is rare for a former president to actively prepare for his return to the White House after leaving it. Only Grover Cleveland, who was elected 22nd President of the United States in 1884 and 24th in 1892, managed to achieve this. Four more failed. Donald J. Trump is only the sixth former president to attempt such a comeback. But the conditions under which he seeks the Republican Party nomination are unprecedented.
The former president is the target of several lawsuits. Two of these involve conspiracy allegations against the United States in connection with its ongoing and documented efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Seven of those cases are expected to result in trials and possible convictions this year, even as Trump engages in the battle for the Republican primary.

The large number of trials against Donald Trump is shaking up the American election year, which is likely to attract even more attention than usual. The complex process of primaries and caucuses to nominate Republican and Democratic candidates begins Jan. 15 in Iowa and culminates in both parties' conventions this summer. The names of the contenders could be known sooner if their opponents throw in the towel before these two deadlines. Like every four years, March 5th, Super Tuesday, could be crucial.
Donald Trump has an overwhelming lead in the Republican electorate (more than 60% in national polls), and his popularity seems to suffer only superficially from his antics and behavior. And the numerous courtrooms in which he will appear will be so many platforms that he plans to use to portray himself as a martyr, a victim of “corrupt elites” and a “politicized” justice system.
According to the trade site FiveThirtyEight, Trump fell in the polls by an average of only five points in August 2023 after he was indicted in Georgia for attempting to manipulate the results of the presidential election in that state. In the weeks following his famous mugshot, his popularity rose even further.
