The author of Vai na Fé reveals who decided to add evangelical characters to the soap opera

The characters’ belief and relationship to that feeling is what moves Globo’s new seven o’clock soap opera Vai na Fé. The story centers on an evangelical woman whose faith is tested in the face of adversity. In a rare approximation of canal soap operas, the practice of the Protestant religion is highlighted as Sol, the protagonist of the storyline witnessed by Sheron Menezze, has faith as her guide.

When the storyline was published, the press questioned whether this choice had anything to do with Globo’s strategy to attract the attention of the evangelical public, as it was a wellrecognized niche in its competitor Record’s audience. According to Vai na Fé author Rosane Svartman, the theme was born when she was writing the character’s characteristics, and not because of any imposition or pressure from the broadcaster.

In an exclusive interview for the Well Telinhathe author explained that given a survey conducted at the time of Bom Sucesso (2019), her previous soap opera, it was shown that half of the female audience in this series were made up of Protestant women.

“I started noticing that there were four to six women in this group of 10 evangelicals. It was a telenovela they loved, even Paloma (Grazi Massafera, protagonist of the production) who spoke to a saint and went to the Catholic Church. When I saw that, I asked myself: Why not an evangelical protagonist? Even more than 99% of Brazilians say they believe. It doesn’t make sense that a protagonist doesn’t have beliefs that are so important to her. Sol is treated with all the affection and respect that my other protagonists guarantee.

As the first chapter was due to be shown on Monday (16th), Vai na Fé was supposed to premiere in January 2022, but it was changed three times due to Globo’s schedule affected by the Covid19 pandemic. Despite these changes, Rosane was not discouraged by her story.

“I am very excited to open with hope and create dialogue a year after a pandemic. So that’s my expectation. It was born at the time of Bom Sucesso in 2019, when we realized that the public accepted imperfect characters, people like us, sometimes we act one way in one place and another in another. The characters are people who make mistakes and succeed, they learn,” he says.

Vai na Fé not only drinks from the same formula as Bom Sucesso, but also from Totalmente Demais (2015), another act by Rosane. After two seasons of Malhação and two soap operas, she has established her storytelling style.

“I don’t have a construction strategy as a writer, but I want to tell good stories. I’m very passionate about what I do. I have a desire to tell a story with affection and respect. Maybe the greatest tool for me.” As a writer, you listen. When you speak, you have to be able to listen. My soap operas have imperfect characters in common,” he analyses.

“I have this desire to tell a good story, to have dialogue and to talk. On a soap opera, we’re talking to millions of people, so I freeze when I think about it. If I can tell the best story I can, with the best character I can, with conflicts, dilemmas, adventures, laughter but also tears, for me that’s where I go.”
