La 1 broadcasts the first episode of the final season of Cuéntame, which says goodbye 22 years later. In La Sexta, Desmontando explores a memory of the Black Death of 1348. For its part, Antena 3 broadcasts a new episode of the competition The Floor. Cinema is well represented by two undeniable masterpieces: East of Eden on TCM and La legión invincible on Movistar Clásicos.
‘East of Eden’
3 p.m., AMC
East of Eden. USA, 1955 (110 minutes). Director: Elia Kazan. Cast: James Dean, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey.
Almost seventy years later, East of Eden is still a reference. Kazan creates a family drama full of infinite readings, with tense gesture and convulsive mood, in which an exemplary mastery of cinemascope depicts the inner torment that torments two brothers who fight for their father’s affection and are exposed to an oppressive and unhealthy environment. In the emotional orphanage of his characters, Kazan paints a bleak picture of the human condition. And out of all this, the character of James Dean stands out, showing that myths can also be great actors.
“The Invincible Legion”
7.35 p.m., Movistar Classics
She wore a yellow bow. USA, 1949 (98 minutes). Director: John Ford. Cast: John Wayne, Victor McLaglen, Joanne Dru.
“The Invincible Legion” is the first western that John Ford shot in color and the second film in the so-called Cavalry trilogy that completes Fort Apache and Río Grande. Ford traces an explosive travel narrative of stunning plastic beauty in which John Wayne, a veteran cavalry captain nearing retirement, must navigate a war with the Indians that he cannot escape. The Invincible Legion oscillates between the epic and the intimate, presenting its characters, uprooted but always upright, under a halo of irresistible fatality. One of the master’s most bitter, radical and innovative works.
