The best free agents who remain for the Steelers in places where they are needed

From a rostering perspective, the Pittsburgh Steelers are far from a finished product, and the team will likely remain active in open arms ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Not every position is still considered a position of necessity for the Steelers, so it’s important to take a look at the best of what’s left in the vacant hands at these key positions. Below are some, not all, of the available free agents remaining on the open market at the time of this writing. Of course, this list will change as players are signed.

quarterback

The Steelers could design a quarterback, but if they don’t, they’ll likely add another arm for their offseason training. This could be done through free agency, so here are some names of quarterbacks that are still on the market.

Ryan Fitzpatrick
Cam Newton
Blaine Gabbert
AJ McCarron
Geno Smith
Joshua Dobbs
Mike Glennon

security

This is the position that everyone is watching closely, and there’s a pretty steep drop-off after the first few names on this list. It’s understood the Steelers will eventually make a safety move, even if Terrell Edmunds is re-signed. But if not, here are some names they could sign up for.

Tyrant Mathieu
LandonCollins
Terrell Edmunds
Rodney McLeod
Damontae Kazee
Marcell Harris
Charles Washington
Karen Jackson
Kean Neal
Deshazor Everett
Tavon Wilson
Matthew Farley
Andreas Sendjo
Jeff Heide
Dean Marlowe

wide receiver

The Steelers need to complement the receiver position in a variety of ways, likely in both the draft and freehand. So if they got a veteran, who would it be? There are some flashy names on this list, but most are on the wrong side of 30 years. Nonetheless, there is still some value in the receivers available.

Julio Jones
Jarvis Landry
Want filler
Ty Hilton
Cole Beasley
Emmanuel Sanders
AJ Green
Sammy Watkins
All hurts
De Sean Jackson
Danny Amendola
Odell Beckham Jr.
Marquis Goodwin

Back race

Adding to the running back depth chart should be on the team’s to-do list sometime this offseason, and finding a veteran that’s cheap and can back Najee Harris makes sense. Having a proven commodity in back-up running back will ease some of the pressure on Harris and also allow the team not to put most of the workload on his back. Here’s who’s available.

Melvin Gordon
Tarik Cohen
Marlon Mack
DavidJohnson
Philip Lindsay
SonyMichel
Giovanni Bernhardt
Jerick McKinnon
AlexCollins
Darrell Williams
Latavius Murray
Devonta Freeman

Offensive tackle

While the team may not go out and get a free agent tackle following the signing of Chuks Okorafor, adding depth to the position is possible. If they do decide to do so, here are some names to keep an eye on.

Nate Solder
Duane Brown
Bryan Bulag
Eric Fisher
Daryl Williams
Markus cannon
Zach banner
Reilly Reif
Brandon Shell
Kendall Lamb

cornerback

The Steelers could address the cornerback position in the 2022 NFL Draft, or they could go out and get a proven asset to strengthen the cornerback position. If you want to go the veteran route, there are a few notable names available. Then the question becomes, how much would it cost the team?

Stephen Gilmore
Trae Waynes
Joe Haden
Kyle Fuller
Tavon Young
Chris Harris
Patrick Petersen
Janoris Jenkins
Bryce Callahan
Jason Verret
Xavier Rhodes
JimmySmith
AJ Bouye
Steven Nelson
PJ Williams
