The “big leap” was canceled by Fox after one season

Fox decided not to continue with the second season of the Great Leap Forward. The ballet-comedy drama, starring Scott Foley and Simon Rekasner, had 11 episodes for a freshman that ended in December, with the network postponing a decision on the show’s future until spring.

It’s one of Fox’s two first-rate bubble dramas after soft limited editions, along with Our Kind Of People, which I hear looks promising for a second season due to the Fox Tubi streamer’s strong performance.

With its music, stage performances and ambitious themes, The Big Leap was a favorite of Fox brass during the development process and arrived with a lot of noise before launch, drawing parallels with Fox Glee’s breakthrough hit.

Cancellation / Renewal Report Card: TV shows ended or continue in season 2021-22

But the Big Leap did not follow the trajectory of Glee’s rating. The linear ratings were soft, with the drama being ranked as the lowest-rated series on Fox this season.

Still, Fox bras creatively liked The Big Leap, which scored a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The network met with the team of The Big Leap to hear their performance for season 2 before making the final decision.

The big leap was a show-in-show that took viewers on a journey of self-acceptance, body positivity and empowerment at all ages. It was described as a modern tale of a second chance, chasing your dreams and returning to what is yours. The show revolves around a group of unlucky characters who try to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-destroying reality dance show based on live production of Swan Lake.

The big leap was produced by 20th Television and Fox Entertainment. Liz Heldance created the series, inspired by the British reality series Big Ballet. She is an executive producer with the show’s director Jason Wiener and Sue Nigel of Annapurna TV.
