The Brewers def. the Pirates first in NL Central, ending their losing streak – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

In few disciplines patience is a greater virtue than in baseball.

The Milwaukee Brewers made it to victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Platte on Friday night. They hope this will produce similar results throughout the regular season.

A four-walk first streak against Pirates starter Rich Hill set the stage for a thrilling 5-4 win at American Family Field that put the Brewers on a six-game losing streak and propelled them back to first place by 35-34.

With two outs and nobody at the end of the first half, the Brewers started a rally from the front with three walks and a catcher interference that led to a run, then Blake Perkins came up with a two-run single for a 3-0 lead by scoring just one hit in the innings.

An RBI double by William Contreras in the fourth and a solo home run by Joey Wiemer in the sixth inning provided just enough safety to hold off a Pirates rally in the sixth and seventh innings.

BOX score; Brewers 5, pirates 4

Julio Tehran was excellent again.

The Brewers right-hander went six innings and allowed just two runs, marking the fifth time in as many starts since signing with the team that he went at least five innings and allowed no more than two runs.

Tehran hit just twice over the minimum, batting three and walking just one while conceding just one hit, a solo home run by Carlos Santana that set the second hit.

Tehran’s ERA now sits at a paltry 1.78 after five appearances as a brewer.

And this time, Milwaukee was able to make up for its excellence, albeit narrowly.

The Pirates scored twice in the seventh game against substitute Elvis Peguero with a single from Ke’Bryan Hayes, but Perkins threw out Josh Palacios in the third play to prevent a major rebound.

Devin Williams got back in the saddle after the toughest performance of his career Tuesday in Minnesota and walked another tightrope to claim the win.

Williams went out to Jack Suwinski, then Josh Palacios smashed a double against the center left wall to level the run in third place and start the scoring position.

The Brewers, closer, fought back to defeat Hayes and beat Jason Delay for a much-needed win.
