The United Nations Environment Program on Monday honored China’s Blue Circle environmental initiative with the Champions of the Earth 2023 Award, the United Nations’ most prestigious environmental honor, for its innovative technology to treat marine plastics.
This year there were five winners from a total of 2,500 applications. They include the South African Scientific and Industrial Research Council, whose efforts have contributed to the global fight against plastic pollution, the Nairobi-based agency said in a statement.
Awarded in the Business Vision category, Círculo Azul’s initiative uses blockchain technology and the Internet of Things to comprehensively monitor the entire life cycle of plastic pollution; This includes collection, regeneration, reprocessing and resale.
To date, it has successfully collected more than 10,700 tons of marine debris, becoming China’s largest marine plastic waste program.
And it is the result of the collaboration of more than 6,000 individuals and more than 200 companies in east China’s Zhejiang Province.
