The company will weigh passengers before flights

Air New Zealand airline weighs its passengers before boarding international flights at Auckland International Airport New Zealand. The company must complete the measure by July 2nd.

The action by New Zealand’s flagship airline was prompted by the country’s civil aviation authority. The aim of the initiative is to collect data on the loading and weight distribution of aircraft.

The airline’s cargo screening improvement expert, Alastair James, told CNN that everything on the plane from luggage to inflight meals is heavy. The average weights determined as part of this initiative are used for customer, crew and hand luggage.

As some passengers may be embarrassed to reveal their weight in front of others, the data will remain anonymous. Not even the heaviest passenger sees how many kilograms he has on the scales.

“We know stepping on the scale can be scary,” James said. “We want to reassure our customers that there is no visible ad anywhere.”

In 2021, the airline conducted the same investigation with passengers on domestic flights. Back then, customers on international flights were left out due to the coronavirus pandemic. COVID19.

Passengers flying direct to JFK Airport from Auckland new Yorkare among those who may be invited to participate in the survey as it is one of the longest direct flights in the world.
