A Islamic Jihad, another armed group alongside Hamas that is also based in Gaza and accused of launching an attack from Lebanon in the past, claimed responsibility for the attack in northern Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the intruders fired mortars and entered Israeli territory. Two of them were killed and another fled to Lebanon.
Israeli forces used helicopters to defend against the attack. Their planes hit three associated military posts Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite armed organization that waged war with Israel in 2006. The Shiites confirmed on Monday evening that three of their fighters had been killed in Israeli bombings, according to a statement from Lebanese broadcaster Al Manar. In response to the deaths, Hezbollah later said it had carried out attacks on two Israeli military barracks with guided missiles and mortars.
An army spokesman confirmed that Israeli soldiers had been injured in Monday’s clashes, but did not give the number.
On Sunday, Hezbollah attacked three Israeli posts with artillery shells and rockets aimed at the Shebaa Farms area, an area it considers occupied by Lebanon. Israeli forces responded with artillery fire and drone strikes.
O Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist group that controls the Gaza Strip, called on armed groups in Lebanon on Saturday to join the attack on Israel. Islamic Jihad, which already worked with Hamas, has a strong presence in both Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon called for calm. Andrea Tenenti, spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said both sides must exercise “maximum restraint” to “avoid further escalation of the conflict and loss of life.”
