The events of The Crown season 4 focused on the 1980s, while the new episodes of season 5 focus on the 1990s, a challenging time for the royal family. Some of the most catastrophic events of this decade are the divorce of Diana and Charles and the Windsor Castle fire which destroyed 115 rooms. Additionally, other stories that can be addressed include the split between Prince Andrew and Princess Anne and the moment the Queen sued The Sun. It is worth noting that in the 1990s the world resisted observance of standards of etiquette and hampered the tradition and importance of the royal family to other nations.

The story continues the tradition of changing characters every two seasons and brings new important names to the role of the British monarchy, such as Imelda Statunton, an actress who has previously starred in Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter. The actress takes over as Queen Elizabeth II from Olivia Colman, who played the monarch in seasons 3 and 4. Dominic West, who was also part of the Downtown Abbey cast, takes on the role of Prince Charles, previously played by actor Josh O’Connor. Elizabeth Debicki, who has worked on titles such as The Great Gatsby, is playing Princess Diana in place of Emma Corrin. Jonathan Pryce, who starred in Game of Thrones, also plays Prince Philip.

According to sources at The Telegraph UK, The Crown season 5 will also have implications for Buckingham Palace. The royals have previously raised concerns about how Diana and Charles’ divorce will be portrayed, and at other times have even had “rougher” actions when they felt internal drama was being uncovered on the show. Therefore, the royal house tries to highlight the series as entertainment and not as a truthful documentary.

Indeed, the series has resonated well with audiences and has become a passion for those interested in British royal history. Among review sites, The Crown has an excellent rating: 84 (out of 100) on Metacritic and 8.7 (out of 10) on IMDB.
