The Cuban Vice President arrives in Ghana, the first stop on his African trip

The member of the Politburo and Vice President of the Republic of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa arrived in Ghana this Monday after five o’clock in the afternoon (local time) to begin an official visit that will last until November 15.

This is the first stop of the Cuban Vice President’s tour of Africa. and that, as he announced on his social network X when he arrived in Ghana, he would take him there in the coming days Rwanda and Ethiopia as well as Guinea-Bissauwhere he will also take part in activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of that nation’s independence.

After the formal welcoming ceremony on the esplanade of Kotoka International Airport – very similar to the ceremony conducted for heads of state in this country -, Valdés Mesa had a brief conversation with Ghanaian Deputy Tourism Minister Mark Okraku Manteyto which he spoke in commemoration of the next anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which took place on December 23, 1959.

This, he said, was my first visit to Ghana. He then pointed to several common themes that particularly characterize bilateral relations He commented on how much African history and traditions have contributed to our cultural roots.

For his part, the Vice Minister of Tourism considered “a “wise decision” that the Vice President of the Republic began his tour of this countrys, where “the efforts of Cuba for peace.”

The Cuban delegation also includes First Vice Minister of Public Health, Tania Margarita Cruz Hernández; Angel Villa Hernández, Deputy Director General for Bilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Cuban Ambassador Anette Chao García.

According to the agenda planned in Accra Valdés Mesa will dialogue with the country’s highest authorities and honor the history of this brotherly nation.

There will also be an exchange with cooperation partners who provide their services here, with solidarity members, with graduates in the Greater Antilles and with representatives of the Cuban community who live in Ghana.
Crucial to the development of relations between Cuba and this African nation south of the Sahara were the impulses given to them by the pan-African leader, founder and first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz gave.

The cooperation between the two countries is intensive, with a focus on the health sector: hundreds of Ghanaian doctors have graduated on the island and our doctors have been working together in this partner country since 1983.
