The Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 on Thursday night in MLB’s second game at Field of Dreams.

Before the game began, MLB paid tribute to the movie that bears the game’s name. Former Reds Ken Griffey Jr. and his father Ken Griffey Sr. emerged from the corn, recited the famous lines of the film’s final scene and had a catch in the outfield surrounded by several children and adults.

Then the teams took the field through the corn along with some of their legends like Ferguson Jenkins and Johnny Bench.

After Jessie James Decker’s performance of the national anthem, it was time to play ball.

After scoring two quick outs, Reds starter Nick Lodolo allowed four straight Cubs to reach base. He hit Patrick Wisdom with a pitch and Seiya Suzuki’s double propelled him in from the start. Nico Hoerner played it in and then he scored with Ian Happ’s double. The Reds found themselves in a 3-0 hole that they couldn’t get out of.

The Reds threatened in the second inning by fielding their first two runners, but Drew Smyly hit to the side. Nick Madrigal added an RBI single for the Cubs in the fourth.

By the seventh inning, Cincinnati couldn’t get anything going on offense. They took advantage of their first two batters getting to base. Matt Reynolds doubled to the right midfield wall that hit both runners and cut the Cubs lead in half. However, Nick Senzel landed, Kyle Farmer flew out and Joey Votto struck to end the threat.

Smyly pitched five scoreless innings and hit nine batsmen. Brandon Hughes and Rowan Wick combined for three perfect innings of relief, with Wick recording the save. They also slapped five batters together.

Lodolo allowed all four Cubs runs, followed by a scoreless 4.1 goalless frames from the Reds’ bullpen.

Willson Contreras rolled his ankle in the third inning and rolled over in pain. He was substituted between second and third place, which gave him time to get over the injury and rest – staying in the game. Madrigal led with three goals.
