Chilean Senate 2
Santiago de Chile.- The Constitutional Commission of the Chilean Senate today continues its debates to approve the regulations that will allow the process to reach a new Magna Carta, replacing the one imposed during the military dictatorship.

The day before, this body advanced essential issues such as the 2023 election calendar to elect the members of the Constitutional Council and the holding of a referendum for ratification.

Elected by popular vote and compulsory ballot on May 7, the group of 50 gender-balanced councilors will be installed 30 days later and given five months to carry out their work based on a draft by 24 experts appointed by the National Congress.

The referendum to ratify or reject the new text will take place on December 17 and the vote is also mandatory.

However, important issues remain to be analyzed, including the process for naming special seats for tribal peoples to be added to the council’s 50 members.

This Thursday, the Commission will also discuss the crucial point of what will happen if the opt-out option is imposed in the ratification referendum, as happened on September 4th.

The dilemma is whether to continue the process in any way or remain in effect Constitution from 1980.

A number of changes to the legislative agreement introduced by some political factions, including those that have not signed the document such as the far-right Republican Party, also need to be addressed.

The commission promised to complete this part of the constitutional process this week and send it to the two legislative chambers for approval in plenary.
