Imagination Life: The Democratic congressman will swear into office on a $5 MILLION Superman comic — along with a photo of his parents and a certificate of citizenship
- Congressman-elect from Long Beach will take the oath of comics
- He secured it on loan from the Library of Congress
- A native of Lima, he will also submit an immigration certificate
- He says he lost his parents to Covid
- Lawmakers can’t take an oath until Republicans sort out their speaker debacle
Co-legislators will want to think twice before tugging on MP-elect Robert Garcia’s suit jacket – he’s taking the oath of office with his hand on a prized Superman comic.
He’s not a DC comic. Garcia, the former mayor of Long Beach, tweeted that he will take the oath of office on an original Superman #1 comic from the Library of Congress collection.
The self-proclaimed “comic nerd” will also put his hand on his citizenship certificate and a photo of his parents. He lost both of them to COVID in 2020.
‘Will be proudly sworn into the US Constitution before Congress. Below the constitution are 3 points that mean a lot to me personally. A photo of my parents who I lost to Covid, my certificate of citizenship and an original Superman #1 from the @libraryofcongress,” he wrote with a smiley face emoji and one of the American flag.
California Rep. Elect Robert Garcia is sworn in in a classic Superman comic, along with a picture of his late parents and his certificate of citizenship (along with the Constitution).
But before members of the House can take the oath, House Republicans must resolve a bitter internal feud over the choice of a speaker, which they were unable to do on Tuesday. Another Superman fan, former President Donald Trump, publicly pledged his support to embattled Rep. Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday.
Previously, a reporter tweeted a picture of the classic comic along with a long line of memorabilia brought back by other legislators, including the usual collection of family Bibles.
The Library of Congress has a number of early comics in its collection.
Garcia was born in Lima, Peru and grew up in California. His mother, who worked in healthcare, and stepfather died from the coronavirus in 2020, the Washington Post reported.

“My mother has been caring for patients as a medical assistant in the same clinic for over 25 years. She helped thousands of patients, nurses and doctors. She was a healthcare hero. Our healthcare workers need your support in the fight against COVID-19. Stay safe and protect our families,” he tweeted after she died.
Garcia was elected to serve in a newly created district combining two others, succeeding Democratic Rep. Alan Lowenthal Lucille Roybal-Allard.
A comic similar to the one in the library collection sold for $5.3 million last year.
