The clock hands moved from 100 to 90 seconds towards 00:00. The bulletin issued by the nuclear scientists says that the reason for this acceleration could be related to the war in Ukraine. Added to this are nuclear tensions and the global climate crisis, which can endanger human life.
Clock that marked the time of the end of mankind
“We live in a time of unprecedented peril, and the Doomsday Clock reflects that reality. 90 seconds to midnight is the closest time the clock has ever hit midnight, and it’s a decision our experts don’t take lightly,” commented Rachel Bronson, President and CEO of the Bulletin, in her recent report.
Supporters and sponsors of the initiative are 10 Nobel Prize winners and several scientists. You make the decisions that move the hands of the doomsday clock to indicate the approaching end of mankind.
The hands came closest to midnight, a distance of 100 seconds traveled three years ago, in January 2020. The situation has worsened, and nuclear tensions show humanity is approaching a greater risk.
planet in danger
“Russia’s war with Ukraine has raised profound questions about how states interact and has undermined international norms of behavior that underpin successful responses to a variety of global risks. Worst of all, Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons are a reminder to the world that an escalation of the conflict by accident, design or misjudgment poses a terrible risk.
The climate crisis and biological threats like the coronavirus also helped shift the hands.
The doomsday clock was created in 1947, just after World War II, when it was 7 minutes to midnight. The clock was 17 minutes from the last time the war ended.
