The Anaheim Ducks acquired defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin in a trade from the Buffalo Sabers on Friday.
In return, they gave up a fourth-round pick in 2025.
Lyubushkin is a strong Russian defender. He hit 99 goals in 68 games last season with the Sabers.
Citing an anti-gay Kremlin law that made him fear for his safety and that of his family members living in Russia, Lyubushkin caused a stir when he refused to attend the warm-up before a game against the Canadians in Buffalo. at a party celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.
The 29-year-old right-hander also played for the Arizona Coyotes and Toronto Maple Leafs during his career.
In 279 NHL games, staunch defensive back Lyubushkin has 39 points, including five goals.
