“It only exists in Arrábida and during its life it only travels about 9 meters,” said Rasteiro.

The snails live on the largest limestone cliff on the European coast more than 380 meters high, with a path taken by a plant called CarrascodaArrábida. Hard and rough, it can bother even those who make it to the summit.

Francisco runs the Costa Azul speleological center. He says he lived on the huge cliff for seven months.

“I did things I never could have imagined, you know, I built a treehouse myself. (…) He hunted wild boars, he had a vegetable garden,” he said.

Life in the natural park seems protected, but Francisco has already noticed the effects of climate change: “It rains very little, it used to rain 700 millimeters a year, now it rains about 150, 200.”

With the drought of the Arrábida, the number of insects decreases, which changes the natural balance.

In addition, quarries are a problem. They are pushing beyond the boundaries of the park, driven by the “boom” in real estate construction in Portugal. Sesimbra, for example, was once a fishing village and has more than doubled in size in the last few decades.
