“The EU is not ready for new members”

A group of Franco-German experts warns: Without reforms, the EU will not be able to face enlargement. His proposals are well known, but they require political courage.

Cutting through the confusion: This is how the EU survived, despite the lack of legal responsibilities and clear procedures, first the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009, then the migration crisis of 2015 to 2016, then the pandemic and, subsequently, numerous crises resulting from the Russian attack problems plaguing Ukraine. But things cannot continue like this. Six Balkan states, as well as Ukraine and Moldova, are knocking on clubs’ doors with increasing impatience. For geopolitical reasons, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the EU to postpone them until the next day. So what to do?
