The EuroLat Parliamentary Assembly debates begin in Madrid

It’s just the preparations for the four-day sessions at a thorny moment for the Iberian country, which has just had a hard-fought general election and indeed political forces are only just beginning negotiations to form a government.

After preparatory meetings and debates aimed at reviving the bi-regional dialogue, King Felipe VI received the European and Latin American delegates.

The XV The EuroLat Assembly, which will take place on July 24-27, will take stock of the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) Summit, which ended a week ago in Brussels.

The 150 members of EuroLat – 75 MEPs and 75 representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean parliaments – will start their meetings tomorrow, Tuesday, by topic (human rights, political affairs, security, economy, climate change, crime, terrorism and others).

Although not yet confirmed, the opening speech at Wednesday’s inauguration will be delivered by Pedro Sánchez, then acting President of the Spanish government.

Speakers will also be the Speakers of the Senate, Ander Gil; and from the House of Representatives, Meritxell Batet, and EuroLat co-chairs, Spanish MEP Javi López and Colombian MP Óscar Darío Pérez.

On Thursday, the plenary session of the EuroLat Assembly will be held, where previously prepared reports and recommendations will be debated and voted on on the above issues, as well as on the fight against hate speech, the regulation of digital platforms, the challenges of Covid-19 in education and health, and access to water.

The closing speech of the assembly will be held by the incumbent Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares.

EuroLat is the parliamentary institution of the European Union-Latin America and Caribbean bi-regional strategic association and meets once a year in plenary session. The previous one took place in April 2022 in Buenos Aires.
