The foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) agreed this Wednesday (September 21, 2022) to prepare new sanctions against Russia, which should be completed as soon as possible, as the head of community diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced.
As Borrell has pushed, this new package of sanctions will affect new sectors of Russia’s economy, including technology, and will involve new people, but it has not yet been finalized. The foreign ministers, who met urgently in New York, also pledged in a statement adopted by consensus to supply arms to Kyiv for as long as it takes.
The meeting was convened on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists and threatened to deploy his entire arsenal, including nuclear. “It is clear that Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine, he is trying to destroy the whole country by other means,” Borrell said at a press conference after the meeting.
The Spanish diplomat believed that Moscow’s recent moves are aimed at undermining the support Ukraine receives from its allies and threatening international peace and security “on an unprecedented scale (…) broad support for the capability.” of Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty for as long as necessary.”
Regarding the new sanctions, Borrell explained that given the informal nature of the meeting, a political agreement has been reached and that formal decisions will be needed to specify them and make them effective. In the statement they adopted, European foreign ministers also condemned plans to organize pseudo-referendums on annexation to Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine and made it clear that they will never recognize their results.
“The EU remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and demands that Russia immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its troops and military equipment from all areas of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” the document concludes .
