The European Union launched on Monday, March 7, the procedure for considering applications for membership of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, said France, which presides over the Council of the European Union.

Three countries filed a lawsuit after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The European Commission will have to give an official opinion and then the 27 will have to decide whether to grant applicants candidate status before long and difficult negotiations.

Thus, it took the European Commission two years to present its opinion after Romania’s application for membership.

Representatives of Member States in Brussels reached “an agreement to invite the European Commission to provide an opinion on each of the applications for EU membership submitted by Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova,” the chairman said on his Twitter account.

On Monday, a written procedure was launched for Member States to “endorse” “draft letters intended to obtain the opinion of the European Commission,” the report said. Several Member States supported the three country approach, but the process is lengthy and membership requires unanimity.

“We will discuss Ukraine’s application for membership in the coming days,” European Council President Charles Michel tweeted on Monday after another meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
