The European Union (EU) gave the green light this Thursday (14) for Ukraine to join the economic bloc. At a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, leaders agreed to begin negotiations on the Eastern European country's accession. The decision is considered historic.
Now Kiev can present its candidacy. However, the process can take years. This was no cause for concern for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who celebrated the decision on social media.
The European Union gave the green light for Ukraine to join on the condition that the country begins the accession process as soon as the war against Russia ends.

“A victory for Ukraine, a victory for Europe,” Zelensky wrote.

Ukraine enjoyed the support of 26 of the 27 EU countries. Only Hungary, led by the ultraright Victor Orbán, was against it. But at the time of the vote, he decided to leave the chamber and not exercise his veto power.
