New dispute over the Finnish prime minister. Footage surfaced on social media on Wednesday showing 36-year-old Sanna Marin partying and being criticized by opposition members. The head of government was widely criticized last December after pictures showed her in a nightclub when she had contact with Covid-19.
Another troubled evening for Sanna Marin. A video posted on social media shows the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) dancing and singing with a group of friends, including several Finnish celebrities. Among them a singer, a stylist or even a YouTuber well-known in Finland, according to the newspaper Iltalehti.
The images, of unknown origin and undated, were released by the Visagrad 24 media on Twitter and were viewed nearly 2.5 million times as of this Thursday afternoon.
An evening denounced by part of the opposition
The video quickly provoked reactions from the opposition. But no question of Covid-19, the prime minister has been criticized for being a bit too party girl this time when she was spotted at a popular music festival in Finland last July.
True Finns MP Riika Purra also urged the Prime Minister to undergo a drug test, citing “a shade of doubt” about Sanna Marin’s sobriety, according to the BBC.
However, other Finnish politicians have criticized the affair for taking precedence over other more important issues.
The prime minister assumes so
Sanna Marin responded by expressing her “disappointment” that the video had been released, according to the AP. She also firmly denied using any illegal substance, while saying she was willing to take a test to prove it. “I have nothing to hide,” she assured YTE News.
The 30-year-old, currently the youngest head of government in the world, has chosen this festive evening. “I have a family life, a professional career and I have free time to spend with my friends. Just like a lot of people my age,” she said.
Considering that controversy has no place, Sanna Marin rejected the idea of ending these moments of relaxation. “I will continue to be exactly the same person that I have been and I hope that will be accepted,” she said.
A first trip to an already selected nightclub
The Prime Minister was heavily criticized last December for a nightclub evening. The outing came hours after she saw her foreign minister who had tested positive for Covid-19. She was therefore considered the case contact person.
Sanna Marin had assured that his foreign minister had initially informed him that the directives did not oblige him to isolate himself as the prime minister was being vaccinated. She would then have missed two text messages recommending the opposite. The prime minister finally issued a public apology.
