The United States dropped the equivalent of 38,000 meals. However, the aid does not replace the work of humanitarian land convoys, whose entry into the enclave remains difficult.
The first packages dropped by the Americans were greeted in Gaza, Palestine, as a gift from heaven: bundles of about twenty parachutes, a drop in the ocean of the enclave's humanitarian needs. On Saturday, March 2nd, the equivalent of 38,000 meals were distributed. Despite the danger, further missions must follow. “It is extremely difficult to conduct an airdrop in a densely populated environment like Gaza,” said John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council.
At least 1,000 humanitarian vehicles blocked at border
These air deliveries are also significantly more expensive. The Americans are considering delivering aid by sea, but this does not replace humanitarian aid convoys by land.
According to the United Nations, at least 1,000 vehicles are blocked on the Egyptian side of the border while starvation threatens in Gaza. “We must open all border crossings into Gaza,” emphasizes Georgios Petropoulos from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Malnutrition and dehydration particularly affect very young children. According to Palestinian officials, about 10 people have already died.
