The five police officers charged with murder after the fatal beating of 29-year-old African American Tire Nichols in January pleaded not guilty on Friday.

The officers, who were subsequently fired, appeared before a judge in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday, accompanied by their attorneys, who said they pleaded not guilty.
Tire Nichols’ mother was present in the courtroom.
