The former director general of the Guardia Civil, Santiago López Valdivielso, died this Tuesday in Madrid, as confirmed by sources from the PP of Valladolid, a group of which he was leader before embarking on a long political career. López Valdivielso led the armed institute between 1996 and 2004 under the chairmanship of José María Aznar, with whom he had worked during his time in Castilla y León.

He was born in Valladolid in 1950, the son of Santiago López González, who was one of the promoters of the creation of the Fasa Renault factory in Valladolid. He had a law degree and combined his political career with his business activities. Between 1983 and 1986 he was a lawyer for Valladolid in the Cortes of Castilla y León. Also in 1983, he was appointed president of the provincial PP, a position he held for ten years. Between 1986 and 1996 he was a member of Congress and between 2011 and 2016 he held a seat in the Senate as a representative of his province. In 1996, he was appointed Director General of the Guardia Civil by then Prime Minister Aznar, a position he held until 2004, when his term, the longest in this responsibility in a democracy, ended.

The President of PP of Valladolid, Conrado Íscar regretted this Tuesday the death of Santiago López Valdivielso from Valladolid, director general of the Civil Guard from 1996 to 2024, whom he described as “an example of responsibility and commitment to the service of society”. Íscar also stressed that López Valdivielso has taken on “many responsibilities” throughout his time and his political career, stressing that the politician and businessman has always defended Valladolid and carried it in his heart.

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and former mayor of Valladolid, Óscar Puente, has expressed his condolences to the PP on the death of the former director of the Guardia Civil, describing him as “a great guy, part of a very important thing” in the history of the family Valladolid”.
