The Fuego and Santiaguito volcanoes with strong explosions in Guatemala

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) said the first ejected columns of dust between 4,500 and 4,800 meters above sea level.

The company reported ash falls in the towns of Yepocapa, Morelia, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa and La Soledad in the department of Chimaltenango, as well as in Panimaché (Sololá) and Santa Sofía and Siquinalá, Escuintla.

The powerful explosions cause rumbling blasts and powerful avalanches that cascade through the Seca, Taniluya, Trinidad and Las Lajas canyons.

The Insivumeh requested to take into account that the Fuego volcano emits ballistic charge across the plateau, making it extremely dangerous to ascend and/or remain in this location.

Also take into account the possible occurrence of sporadic rainfall and therefore the formation of currents through nearby rivers, which require precautions, especially at vehicle crossings.

In the case of Santiaguito, the crater dome with the accumulated material causes avalanches of blocks and ash, mainly on the southwest and west flanks.

According to the records, dust fell on Loma Linda Palajunoj in the municipality of El Palmar, Quetzaltenango.

The Insivumeh recommended not to approach the areas of the domes, not to be near or within the canyons near the volcanic complex or the southwest lava flow.

Due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, volcanoes cover much of this country's geography, with at least 324 of these structures.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) highlights only 32, the National Mountaineering Federation reports 37, while the Insivumeh considers the remaining 287 to be “hot spots.”

Fuego is the most active in Central America, it has an altitude of three thousand 763 meters above sea level and is discovered over 1,300.

To this day, this is the site of an unimaginable catastrophe that occurred on June 3, 2018, the largest eruption of the new millennium.
