An author accused the Rings of Power series of plagiarizing his fanfiction.
Last week, Amazon and the Lord of the Rings franchise emerged victorious in a lawsuit brought by writer Demetrius Polychron, who accused the series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” of plagiarism. According to the author, the show's plot would be a copy of his fanfic book The Fellowship of the King, which would charge $250 million in royalties.
According to Deadline, in addition to the loss, Polychron will have to pay legal fees totaling around $134,000 in the case. The author must continue to destroy all physical and digital copies of his fan fiction and is prohibited from writing new works inspired by JRR Tolkien's saga.
Commenting on the matter, Steven Maier, attorney for the Tolkien Estate the legal entity that manages Tolkien's estate, said: “This is an important victory for the Tolkien Estate, not allowing unauthorized authors and publishers to monetize Tolkien's popular works.” JRR Tolkien this way.”
The first season of The Rings of Power, currently streaming on Prime Video, ended in October last year and the next part is already in production. The plot covers events before Frodo's (Elijah Wood) journey across Middleearth and focuses on a moment in history of the resurgence of evil.
Created by John D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the cast features famous Hollywood faces including Morfydd Clark, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Robert Aramayo and more.
