The Valencian Government has decided to prioritize and request a compensation fund to alleviate the underfinancing of the Community, while studying and deciding on the reform of the regional financing system. This was announced this Thursday by the Minister of Finance, Economy and Public Administration, Ruth Merino, defending that the approval of this fund is a “priority” since it will make it possible to allocate in 2024 the same resources as the average of all municipalities receive. .
The Minister of Finance met with the Expert Commission on the Reform of the Financing System, during which it was decided to adapt some of the calculations of the reform proposal that this body formulated in 2017 to the current situation. “That's what we want. Be strict with the numbers and the technical data and we will update all the numbers that relate to both the financing system and this compensation fund,” explained Merino. Nevertheless, he estimates the approximate amount that would be missing to “correspond to the average” at 1.5 billion euros.
The spokesman for the Consell also explained that the decision was based on the “disappointment” that accompanied the observation at the last meeting of the Financial and Fiscal Policy Council on December 11 that the government “seems to have no intention of engaging with “To address the problem.” Reform of the system.” “The reform of the financing system is complex and the easy thing is not to face this reform,” complained Merino, who recalled that the approval of a leveling fund was, on the contrary, “simple”. “It's about making the decision and wanting to do it, and that's why I will ask for it wherever it is necessary, how it is necessary and for whomever it is necessary,” he stressed. In this Council, Andalusia has already requested a compensation fund, set at 1,079 million euros. Merino assured this Wednesday that she is also claiming this transition fund.
For his part, the director of the Valencian Institute of Economic Research, Francisco Pérez, who represented the Committee of Experts, emphasized that the meeting served to verify the continued interest of both the Consell and the experts, as well as the coincidence of the political forces and Valencian society the assessment of the situation from a financing perspective, which has given the Community external recognition that it has “many reasons” to demand a change in its situation.
However, the deputy spokesman of the PSPV-PSOE in Las Corts, Toni Gaspar, regretted that the Consell of Carlos Mazón “gives the impression that it is moving slowly with the presentation of a proposal for this new financing system”, pointing out that He hopes , that “this lack of proposals is not due to a greater awareness of the reactions of other autonomous communities governed by the PP that do not have the same needs, as well as their far-right partners in the Valencian Community who do .” I’ve already said, “They won’t help.”
