The Goldbergs renewed for season 10 without Jeff Garlin

ABC’s family time with The Goldbergs continues: The long-running comedy has been renewed for season 10, TVLine has learned.

The series will, of course, return without longtime cast member Jeff Garlin (aka Patriarch Murray Goldberg), who left the show in December 2021 following a staff investigation following multiple complaints about the comedian’s behavior on set. Garlin and Sony Pictures Television reached a mutual agreement that provided for the actor’s departure. Subsequent episodes used recorded dialogue and a body double for Murray, with Garlin’s face overlaid in post-production.

Star Wendi McLendon-Covey broke her silence on Garlin’s exit and the show’s handling of the situation in March. “This season threw us off course because a.) it’s hard to fit someone who doesn’t want to be there and walk in the middle of the scene,” McLendon-Covey wrote on Twitter, “and b.) we didn’t want to rewrite the 2nd half of the season. We give our best.”

According to sources, Garlin’s departure is expected to be addressed when Murray is written out of the series at the start of Season 10.

Earlier this season, the Goldbergs also said goodbye to cast member George Segal, who died in March 2021 at the age of 87 from complications related to bypass surgery. In the season 9 premiere, it was revealed that Pops had died quietly in his sleep.

Season to date, The Goldbergs has averaged just over 4 million total weekly viewers and a demo rating of 0.8 (with Live + 7 DVR playback), just a tad below previous averages. It is ABC’s second most-watched sitcom (only behind The Conners), while The Conners and Abbott Elementary are #1 on the demo. The season 9 finale will air on May 18th.

Goldberg’s ’80s set first premiered in 2013. The series is loosely based on the life of creator Adam F. Goldberg and currently stars McLendon-Covey (as Beverly), Sean Giambrone (as Adam), Troy Gentile (as Barry), Hayley Orrantia (as Erica), and Sam Lerner (as Ericas husband Geoff).
