The next Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 7, announced on Thursday the organization of these awards, whose image has been tarnished in recent years by allegations of corruption and racism.
Nominations will be “announced on Monday, December 11,” organizers added in a press release.
These film and television awards have long been considered the most prestigious after the Oscars in the United States.
But they’ve lost their luster since 2021, when the Los Angeles Times exposed the shady behind-the-scenes operations of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which formed its jury.
Noting in particular that there were no black members at the time, the daily explained how voters accepted the studios’ lavish gifts.
Shunned by the Hollywood elite and banned from television broadcasts in 2022, the Golden Globes have since instituted several reforms to reach a more diverse electorate and put an end to ethical violations.
In 2023, the awards returned to television and despite some absences, the number of stars on the red carpet – from Steven Spielberg to Michelle Yeoh to Brad Pitt – suggested Hollywood was ready to turn a new leaf.
Still, the ceremony recorded the worst viewership in its history with just 6.3 million viewers.
As part of the reforms, the Golden Globes were bought by private investors and the HFPA must disappear.
On Thursday, the new organization also announced the formation of a steering committee “responsible for selecting, confirming and accrediting journalists as voting members” of the Golden Globes jury.
This nine-member committee will “ensure the application of rigorous standards and practices within the electoral body,” the organization promised.
This notably includes Tim Gray, a senior journalist at the influential Variety magazine, who was named vice president of the Golden Globes.
