Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to announce his nomination for the presidency of the United States through the Republican Party on Wednesday (24th) meaning he will be a rival to former President Donald Trump in the party’s primary.
The information comes from the television network NBC.
DeSantis is expected to announce his candidacy on Twitter in a broadcast from the company’s CEO and Tesla founder, Elon Musk. The information was confirmed by the DeSantis political team.
At the same time, he will submit a document to the Federal Elections Commission in which he declares his candidacy.
DeSantis has bet that the customs guidelines in their state of Florida will be discussed nationwide.
He is an ally of Donald Trump, and both politicians’ constituencies are largely the same.
Should Trump be unable to run for legal reasons (he’s already been charged in one trial and may be charged in other trials), DeSantis is likely to inherit a large chunk of the electorate.
Elon Musk says he’s not an ally
Musk confirmed he will be on the show, but said he doesn’t endorse DeSantis.
“At this point I have no plans to endorse any candidate, but I’m interested in using Twitter as a sort of space for discussion,” he said.
The feud with Disney
One of the policies DeSantis followed in his state was to restrict discussions of LGBTQIA+ issues in schools. This law became known as “Don’t Say Gay” (literally “don’t say gay”).
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signs into law what critics have dubbed “don’t say gay.”
Disney, one of Florida’s largest employers, opposed the law. DeSantis then retaliated against the company. Disney had autonomy in an area where its theme parks were located, and the governor ended that privilege for the company.
Disney responded by filing a federal lawsuit against the governor, accusing him of arming the state government to retaliate against the company.
