The governor of Texas sent a bus with illegal migrants to Washington

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott complied with the first of the measures he recently announced to stop migrants from arriving in his state. In apparent contradiction to the policies of Democrat Joe Biden’s administration, the Texan dispatched a bus carrying dozens of Cuban, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan and Colombian migrants to Washington on Wednesday.

When they arrived near the US Capitol, the migrants turned themselves in to officials, who cut off the bracelets they were wearing. Each bus was stated to have the necessary supplies to cover the distance between the Texas and Washington, D.C. communities and carry up to 40 people.

Just days ago, Abbott asserted that “Texans demand and deserve an aggressive and comprehensive strategy to secure our border, not President Biden’s lackluster leadership.”

“As the federal government continues to roll back the common sense policies that once protected our communities, our local police have gone to great lengths to protect Texans from dangerous criminals, deadly drugs and illegal smuggling that are sweeping the state, according to Governor.”

Texas vs the White House

For the White House, this plan is a “publicity stunt”. The U.S. Executive decided to place the deportations under Title 42 and proceed with deportations under procedures that were in place before the pandemic.

In light of this, Abbott announced strict measures to prevent the arrival of migrants. Not only did he bring them to Washington, DC, he ordered barbed wire fences to be erected on the Rio Grande and patrolled other boats to block the passage.

It is very possible that these contradictions will be analyzed in court. There is a precedent from 2012 where the US Supreme Court ruled that states cannot make their own immigration policies.
