The announcement comes just a week after the end of the last series, which saw Matty Edgell crowned champion.

The 28-year-old teacher beat off competition from Josh and Dan to win the Channel 4 series.

After being crowned winner, Matty said: “I don’t know what to say… Everyone said you should go on Bake Off and I thought it was a throwaway comment and never really listened.”

“I never thought I would be on the show, let alone win it!”

Paul praised Matty after he was crowned the winner, noting that Matty “got better and better” as the series progressed.

He said: “He just kept getting better and better and if you want to do it, you do it in the final challenge and that’s exactly what he did.”

Dame Prue was also full of praise for the new Bake Off winner, saying: “I have never met a happier, smiling, uncomplaining and willing baker.”

“He was just having so much fun, learning as much as he could and absorbing everything any of us said.”
