‘The Great Leap Forward’ Canceled – No Second Season of Fox Dance Dramedy

The Great Leap Forward Network did not appear.

Fox has canceled the in-drama dance show after one season, according to our sister site Deadline.

With an average of nearly 2 million viewers and a demo rating of 0.4, The Great Leap Forward ranked Pivoting last among all Fox scripted shows this season in the demo, while attracting the group’s third-largest audience. And among all the drama series launched this season on television, it attracted the smallest audience and ranked second in the demo rating.

The Great Leap Forward tells the story of a reality show similar to So You Think You Can Dance, executive produced by Scott Foley’s Nick, that featured regular people to perform in a remastered version of Swan Lake. In the finale of the first season, and now the series, the troupe put on a live show and Nick wondered if his fictional network bosses would renew the series for a second season. Foley mourned the cancellation on Instagram: “Thank you to everyone who watched and believed in [The Big Leap]. I love this cast and will miss seeing your faces regularly.” He added a note to showrunner Liz Heldens and executive producer Jason Wiener, “Call me, I’ll fly with you.”

His partner Ser’Darius Blaine, who played Reggie, added: “I’ve had a great time with the best people. Living a life I couldn’t even dream of with GIANTS every day. God is good. Thank you for watching.”

During the finale, TVLine discussed with Heldens the possibility of a second season and what that storyline could decide.

“We set it up in the final, with [Brittney’s] pregnancy and the Gabby/Britney/Reggie triangle, so that’s a story we’re going to start building on right away,” EP said at the time. She also mentioned that she wants to devote more screen time to characters like the House of Rush dance troupe in the future.

The Fox series wasn’t Friday’s only casualty: NBC’s Plain Joe also got the ax after one season. TVLine’s renewal scorecard has been updated to reflect both cancellations.
