The Harry and Meghan Archewell Foundation raised $13 million and donated $3 million to buy 12.6 million COVID vaccines

Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation has released its 2020-22 Impact Report, showing how the charity raised $13 million and distributed $3 million in grants to multiple worthy causes in its first year of operation.

The money raised by the Sussexes’ charity has been spread across a variety of areas including vaccine justice, aid centres, refugee resettlement and “building a better online world”.

Their report, released on Sunday, did not include exact totals and royal expert Omid Scobie tweeted the figures in question before sharing a link to the report itself.

In a 24-page report, the philanthropic foundation describes how it:

  • Helped source 12.6 million COVID vaccines through their partnership with Global Citizen.
  • Through a partnership with the Human First Coalition, more than 7,400 people have been rescued from war-torn Afghanistan.
  • Distributed 50,000 meals through a partnership with World Central Kitchen.
  • Development of a positive masculinity resource guide accessed by 3,673 people
  • Built a playground for children in Uvalde, Texas after a school massacre killed 19 young children and two teachers last year
  • Helps fund 13 academic fellows to “address society’s most pressing social media concerns” at the Harvard Institute for Rebooting Social Media

Based in Beverly Hills, Archewell is a hybrid of for-profit and not-for-profit corporate organizations founded in 2020.

The group comprises the Duke and Duchess Charitable Trust and their lucrative, for-profit media production-focused businesses Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions.

The report details the Foundation’s achievements after working with partner organizations that specialize in supporting a particular segment of society. The exact amounts donated to each partner were not disclosed, but in some cases the Sussexes were able to give the exact number of people their funding had helped.

Covid vaccinations

Archewell invested in the People’s Vaccine Alliance, a coalition of 100 organizations, health professionals and world leaders working to ensure equal access to vaccines, tests and treatments around the world.

They also worked with Global Citizen and played an important role in the distribution of COVID vaccines around the world. The Alliance headlined the VAX LIVE concert in Central Park, which they claim raised hundreds of millions of dollars in funds.

The VAX LIVE concert alone mobilized 26 million doses and raised $302 million in vaccine funds, resulting in an additional 60 million COVID vaccines being pledged as part of the same campaign.

The foundation says it has secured 12.66 million doses of COVID vaccine for distribution worldwide as a result of its lobbying work. Harry and Meghan touted that number in a brief overview of Archewell’s key accomplishments.

Afghanistan and Ukraine

Referring to the war-torn countries of Afghanistan and Ukraine, the foundation said its partnership with the Human First Coalition secured a grant that enabled them to move nearly 8,000 people from Afghanistan to safety.

The grant also helped the coalition assist more than 10,000 people in Afghanistan and Pakistan and provide living expenses for 1,000 Afghans in safe houses in both countries.

The grant helped Team Rubicon help 4,000 refugees move in and set up their homes, the Sussexes said. The donation also directly helped 853 families move to new homes.

In Ukraine, a grant provided important funds for the Jewish charity HIAS, which expanded its humanitarian efforts to Ukraine, Poland, Moldova and Romania after war broke out in the country.

The funding helped increase housing, food, and transportation assistance, and provided legal assistance to an unspecified number of refugees.

The grant also helped train men and women to remove landmines and avoid injuries from explosives. It funded 373 sessions with the Halo Trust and helped an estimated 10,000 people learn how to avoid injury from discarded explosives.
