Japanese diplomacy chief Yoshimasa Hayashi is visiting Ukraine on Saturday, said the Japanese embassy in Kiev, which counts Tokyo among its allies in the face of the Russian invasion.

“Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrives in Ukraine,” the embassy said on Facebook, posting a video showing the diplomat being greeted upon his arrival at the train station.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry said Hayashi would discuss recovery and reconstruction efforts with his counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.

According to a Foreign Ministry press release, Mr. Hayashi will be accompanied by representatives of Japanese companies.
Japan, along with Western powers, imposed sanctions on Moscow and provided financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine.
Tokyo also took the rare steps of sending defense equipment and offering refuge to those fleeing the conflict.
However, Japan has not offered military assistance because the country’s post-World War II constitution limits its military capabilities to supposedly defensive measures.
