BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday that the head of state’s diplomacy has been immensely successful with one significant event after another, shaping the pace of China’s diplomatic work overall. which can be highlighted as a local event, two major initiatives and three major visits.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while speaking at a symposium on China’s international situation and foreign relations in 2022. The symposium, held in Beijing, was jointly organized by the China Institute of International Studies and the China International Studies Fund.
Noting that the home event is the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, Wang said the Games have been a resounding success thanks to the concerted efforts of China and the international community.
The opening ceremony brought together 31 heads of state, government and international organizations from five continents to join Chinese people in celebrating the games, Wang noted.
“The international community has witnessed a more confident, stable, open and inclusive China. The Beijing Ice and Snow Gathering marked a new milestone in the efforts of people around the world to embrace new hopes and seek a common future together,” he added added.
Wang further said that the two major initiatives are the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI). In April this year, President Xi Jinping introduced the GSI at the Boao Forum for Asia and offered a Chinese proposal to address global security challenges and achieve lasting peace and security in the world.
“The international community has responded positively to GSI. In six months, more than 70 countries have expressed their support and support for the initiative,” stressed the Foreign Minister.
Wang also said that President Xi, as chairman of the first high-level dialogue on global development held on the sidelines of a BRICS summit in June, announced 32 key steps China will take to implement the GDI, while also offering an open set of projects set up the GDI and the Center for the Promotion of Global Development.
To date, more than 100 countries and various international organizations including the United Nations have pledged their support to the GDI, and nearly 70 countries have joined the Friends of the GDI Group, the senior official said.
As for the three main visits, Wang clarified that these are those conducted by President Xi from September to December, the first of their kind since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic. Notably, these are the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, and the APEC Meeting of Business Leaders in Bangkok, Thailand, and the first Sino-Arab State Summit and the China-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“In the periods before and after the 20th CPC National Congress, Chairman Xi Jinping attended five multilateral summits and held bilateral meetings with heads of state from more than 40 countries, creating three high points for heads of state diplomacy this year and a good start for the work of the CCP’s new central leadership in China’s foreign policy,” Wang concluded.
