The HBO production has been the subject of controversy for many months – particularly after a Rolling Stone article interviewing 13 cast and crew members claimed that the “extreme” show was a “rape fantasy.”

“It was like sexual torture porn,” a source told the publication. Another reiterated, “There’s no point. They’re just trying to figure out how much reaction they can get.”

Early reviews of the show, which currently has 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, certainly do little to refute those reports. According to a review by the Daily Beast: “Depp can almost never be filmed in anything but a parodically skimpy outfit on this terribly ugly show. self-apologetic portrayal of rape culture that is stirring.”

Speaking about her character at the Cannes Film Festival, Lily-Rose said, “I think there’s something about Jocelyn just because she’s a born and bred performer.”

“I think that extends to every aspect of her life, not just her professional life. I think the way she dresses, for example, is that she’s constantly trying to say something to you, or to tell the people who are around her something to express themselves in some way.

“I also think that the character’s occasional nudity physically reflects the nudity that we see in her emotionally,” added the 23-year-old.

Sam, who has faced criticism for nudity on his show Euphoria, said: “It’s funny, I think things that could be revolutionary are sometimes taken too far.”

“I think we live in a very sexualized world,” he continued. “We see this in pop music and how it, in a way, reflects the dark side of the internet. I think on this show and working with Lily, we’ve had a lot of discussions about who she is as a person, who Jocelyn is as a person and what she feels, what she aspires to, who she’s acting in front of.”

“Two things happen when you have a character that has such a strong sense of self and such a strong sexual flair – you end up underestimating her because you’re not quite sure why she’s doing that, why she’s wearing that…” . And at the same time, it’s also what draws people in, it’s what draws an audience in, it’s what captures the imagination,” he said. “I think it’s very much in line with what almost every pop star is doing these days.”
