BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said developing countries should work to urge the international community to prioritize development in global governance.

Wang made the remarks on Thursday while chairing a virtual dialogue between BRICS foreign ministers and their counterparts from emerging and developing countries.

Wang pointed out that the North-South development gap is widening, the energy of international development and cooperation is flagging, and the pandemic is exacerbating the plight of developing countries.

“China is willing to increase the contribution to development cooperation and work with other countries to deepen the Global Development Initiative and achieve tangible results, build a global partnership for development, promote an international environment conducive to development, and the Leveraging development results to the benefit of developing countries,” Wang said.

At present, anti-globalization trends, unilateral sanctions and obstacles to science and technology have seriously affected the economic and social development of emerging and developing countries, he added.

Developing countries should be helped to better integrate into the international division of labor and cooperation and share the dividends of globalization, Wang said.

Referring to the development of science and technology, he added that no one can suppress other countries’ scientific and technological innovation.

There is a need to promote global governance of science and technology and enable developing countries to keep pace with innovation and development. There is also a need to strengthen global public health policies and ensure vaccine accessibility in developing countries, he said.
